London Design Fair remains the go-to destination for global design during the London Design Festival, hosting an impressive 12 country pavilions across the ground floor of the Fair. This year’s countries include Uruguay, Chile, and the Czech Republic alongside returning showcases from Barcelona, Italy, and Sweden.
The Mandarin Oriental backs on to Hyde Park, with a welcome new outdoor terrace. You’ll find a Far Eastern slant on the part Edwardian, part contemporary ground floor but corridors and bedrooms that are so deeply traditional in decoration that you’ll need to pinch yourself to remember that you’re in an Oriental hotel at all. The Queen would surely feel at home; quite right – after all, it was in the dreamy ballroom (where today you can have yoga lessons) in the 1930s that she and Princess Margaret learned to dance.
The Langham is currently one of London’s finest hotels and is now in the hands of hoteliers from Hong Kong. Once you get over the fact that there is absolutely nothing British about the way the Langham now looks, you realize that its new quasi-Oriental slant is really very welcoming and well-executed. The hotel’s restaurant, Landau is a beautiful oval room designed by David Collins (also responsible for the hotel’s romantic new cocktail bar, Artesian).
Alain Ducasse’s three Michelin Star restaurant is placed on Dorchester Hotel, a London Landmark. In this luxury restaurant, people are treated with French Charm and eat classical food. The Executive Chef Jean-Phillipe Blondet is very rigorous about finding the freshest and seasonable produce, of course, and he is meticulous because has been trained by Ducasse, who always says that “the product is the only truth”. If you are looking for a little bit of French style in the heart of London, this is the spot to go to.
This brilliant Michelin-starred restaurant is led by Executive Chef Florian Favario and offers amazing courses with European influences. The glass roof of the restaurant offers a magical experience, radiating the gleam of opulence, so you can’t help but feel indulged the minute you’re shown to your seat. The richly decorated dining room allows guests a visual treat, from natural daytime luminosity to a chandelier-lit evening glow.
